giving it completely to romney last night. governor rendell, you have been in a lot of tough debates. i don't know what you thought. i guess i'm known as an obama supporter and i certainly wanted him to do well last night, and yet i don't get it. i don't quite get it. i thought romney's performance, let's call it that, was masterful. i don't know what the president was up to last night. your thoughts. >> well, i agree with andrew sullivan. i think he's right on in all his points and i agree with you. romney did -- governor romney was terrific last night. he did all the things he had to do to get back in this race, and i am also mystified at the president's strategy. you know, chris, i'm a good sports fan. in fact, i even do sports tv and i write -- >> i know you do. >> and there's a great sports analogy. when you play the perfect defense when you have a lead, when you try to sit on the ball in basketball when you have got a lead, when you play conservative, what often happens is you lose the lead. and i can't for the life of me believe that that's what they did, but that's the only expl

romney taking the stage since last night's debate. that, for most accounts, was a big win for their campaign. was it enough to change the dynamic of the race 33 days before the election? let's go to jim acosta at the rally in fishersville, virginia. trace adkins, i guess, is going to perform there. they're getting ready for a big, big blowout. >> reporter: that's right, erin. they are blowing this day up. you could say this is a #winningday for the romney campaign. trace adkins is on stage. and we saw the evidence of this all day long from the gop nominee, when he got on board his campaign plane earlier this morning. he was already cruising at a higher altitude, erin, chatting up his campaign staff. there was a smile on his face. and, honestly, erin, i've been covering this campaign for a year and a half. this was one of the happiest days that i've seen on the part of this campaign and its staff for some time. but you could tell that things were starting to change duri the day, as the prident was starting to mount that new offensive, going after mitt romney on his statemen

in denver last night and what people saw was a highly energized, motivated and combative mitt romney sharing the stage with a subdued and lackluster president obama. what they saw was mitt romney on his way over the course of 90 minutes to scoring a clear and consensus victory in what will be the first of three meetings. between these two men. for romney, today felt like a new chapter. here's a look at the crowd waiting for him tonight in virginia. while the president today said some things he was expected to say on that stage last night. we begin our coverage with nbc's andrea mitchell. andrea, good evening. >> good evening, brian. the president showed up today armed with attack lines against mitt romney a day late. trying to regain his footing after a rocky debate performance, the president today at an outdoor rally seemed everything he was not last night. >> the man on stage last night, he does not want to be held accountable for the real mitt romney's decisions and what he's been saying for the last year. >> mitt romney was greeted with thunderous applause this morning. at a speech to co

the other night. and governor romney did a good job, for what he needed to do. but i also we the next day on to fact checker and looked at the reality of what they both said. and there was discrepancies on both sides. you know, more discrepancies on romney's side. so i don't trust governor romney. i trust the president a lot more than i trust governor romney. >> okay. we're going to talk a lot more about this in the story, moira, but i'll ask you right now, that 47% remark that mitt romney made with that secretly recorded videotape, he came out and said i didn't mean that at all. it was a mistake. never mind. don't pay attention to that. does that resonate for you? >> i'm so glad you asked that question, carol, because in the past 14 months my husband was unemployed. he just got a temp job tuesday. and we were dependent on that unemployment so that we wouldn't lose our house. we don't have health care, so we had to go to social services. you know, there was a lot of things that we needed help on. so i was part of that 47%, but i'm telling you, i was not a victim. and i was ticked off at g

is governor romney with sean manty last night. >> what i find so offensive about his tax plan, by raising taxes on small business, as he does, he will kill jobs. and right now, what america needs, as much as anything else is more jobs, more jobs more take-home pay. is the whole focus of my campaign. i know what the president's been campaigning on and saying about me is very different than what i actually am, what i actually believe. that is where the difference came. what the president has been saying and reality are pretty far apart. martha: that in the mix this morning. a lot to add into the picture. senior nothing correspondent john roberts is live from st. petersburg, florida, today. that's where we find governor romney. he will hold a rally there later today. what about the aspect of truth of issue in this campaign, john? >> reporter: oh, this is turning out to be a real battle between taxes and the truth, martha. let's handle taxes first of all. governor romney on the stump is insisting his 20% across the board reduction in tax rates would benefit and middle class and small business

because last night on fox, mitt romney made his latest comments on 47%. it's taken him three weeks to get there. now he's saying he was completely wrong. >> yeah, andrea, i would say his comments, remember on september 18th, i think it was, when he came out and did that press conference right after the 47% tape came out, he said it wasn't eloquently stated. he said it was off the cuff. he came nowhere near saying it was wrong and i apologize for it. three weeks on, he's apologizing. what's fascinating, andrea, i would bet a lot of money which in my world isn't all that much, but say i would bet $5 that mitt romney had the line he used with sean hannity ready to use in the debate when he, of course, expected barack obama would attack him in some way, shape, or form on the 47% comment. barack obama never did so, which i continue to find baffling strategically, but mitt romney i think wanted to get it out there in the air before october 16th and the next debate. my guess what he'll do, when barack obama almost assuredly attacks him in the october 16th debate he will say that's old news, i've
